This is a charcoal study for an upcoming painting. I sometimes do these to show where the lights and darks will be situated in more complicated paintings. This one comes from a photo in Rome.

The first is from one of my photos at Montmartre in Paris at the painting colony where I spent some time last year. The second is from my daylong painting exhibition in New Bern, NC this past Oct. for the Mum Fest. Both are 11x15 and mat out at 16x20.

More Montmartre!

Some photos of Montmartre.

The first picture was inspired by a photo I took in Montmartre in Paris. Montmartre, if you are not familiar is the highest point in Paris, soaring very high over the city. It has a church and a village at the top with restaurants and an artists colony. Many artists come there daily to paint and sell artwork. I was fortunate to spend a day there with them, conversing and sketching along side them. It was one of the highlights of my trip and one I hope to repeat soon. As you can see from my painting, I have depicted those artists hawking their wares.

The second is from my photo of a dining experience in Rome. Rome as well as many other european cities has an active outdoor cafe' scene. it is one of the pleasures of life to dine alfresco, drink wine and watch the people move past.

the latest paintings from the weekend. Painted the second on on location at the state fairgrounds yesterday. The venice picture is 15x22 and the fair is 11x15.

These are my latest paintings. Except for "some people I know", it was done last year. The other two are done from my photos from Rome and Paris taken last may. I always look for photos that I can come home and paint from my travels. I would like to be able to paint them on the spot, but usually we are moving too fast for me to stop for an hour or two and then others would have to wait for me.

Anyway, I share them with you for your potential enjoyment.
